Berlin - 2018
Berlin – a city of extremes, the home of the German Kaisers and the antimonarchist revolutions, heaven to the hedonistic ’20, home to the Weimar Republic, headquarters of the Nazi regime. A bombed out shadow of its former glory in the late ’40’s, a no-man’s-land of international intrigue in the ’50 and a divided city for the span of the cold war.
Berlin is all this and much more.
Today’s Berlin is comparable to the Berlin of the roaring ’20. It tries to be all things to all men (and women too). A trendsetter in modern culture and art, an open society for where religious, political and sexual freedoms are respected and cultivated, A living memorial of the Holocaust, Soviet rule, bourgeois conformity and imperial splendor.
On a personal note: The name Berlin actually originates from 'Burl', the Slavic word for 'swamp' – and, yes – Berlin is built on swampland. For me, in addition to its charmingly sweet openness and the splendor of modern Berlin - a pungent swampy smell permeates at times.
