The Heel of Italy
Puglia
Puglia is that stretch of land that makes up the “heel of Italy”, basically a peninsula engulfed by the Gulf of Taranto, the Ionian and the Adriatic Seas
Puglia - A white limestone outcrop, covered in green, protruding into the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean.
It is filled with both natural and manmade attractions.
When water meets limestone one is likely to meet up with some visual wonders. The Grotte di Castellana (a 3.2 long and 80 meter deep network of caves), Gargano National Park (Parco Nazionale del Gargano – with its impressive rocky coastline, swamplands, beech forests & flower-rich valleys.) are just two such marvels.
Towns have much to offer too: Alberobello - The Trulli Town (A Unesco World Heritage Site) , Lecce, the “Florence of the South”, Ostuni - The white city, Otranto – a rocky cascade spilling into the seam, Polignano a Mare – with a historic town center displaying remnants of Arab, Byzantine, Spanish and Norman cultures. And there is Santa Maria di Leuca – the very tip of the heel of Italy, featuring the end part of the Apulian Aqueduct with a fascinating impressive waterfall.
The natural and architectural splendor is augmented by the visual and culinary sensations of Puglian cuisine.
