Landscapes: Deserts of the World
Many people tend to associate deserts with vast areas of billowing sand dunes. In fact most deserts are either stone-covered plains or high rocky plateaus cut by deep dry canyons. This leaves less than 20% of deserts as sandy.
Deserts are usually defined by what they lack.
- An absence of precipitation,
- A shortage of water,
- Sparse vegetation,
- Negligible wildlife.
To me deserts are not about what they lack, deserts are about what they contain, about what they provide.
The desert fosters spirituality. Moses found God in the desert, after being baptized Jesus immediately went into the desert and emerged transformed, and Buddha found his enlightenment in the desert too - coincidence? I doubt it.
The stark landscape speaks directly to the soul.
